Root canal therapy is a common, and often misunderstood, dental procedure. It’s used to keep teeth that have been damaged from being lost due to infection. By preserving the integrity of the natural tooth, root canals let us restore a tooth that might otherwise need to be removed.

How does root canal treatment work?

When a tooth is compromised, the soft inner tissue of the tooth, called the pulp, can be exposed to bacteria. If this happens, a dangerous infection can result and spread to your gums and the supporting tissue for the tooth. If this infection is untreated, the tooth can be lost or damage to your gums can result.

Root canal treatment keeps the tooth safe from infection by removing the pulp. The pulp is removed through a small hole that is drilled in the tooth, and the inside of the tooth is sanitized to prevent further infection. After the treatment, we seal the tooth with a filling and restore it with a dental crown.

Aren’t root canals painful?

Root canals have a reputation for being painful, but modern root canals feel similar to getting a tooth filled. The treatment area may be sensitive to hot and cold for a while after the treatment.

With the continuous advances in dentistry, we offer early interceptive treatment for children as early as seven when required. Orthodontic treatment can be completed in many different ways. Treatment options include traditional metal braces, tooth coloured ceramic braces, invisible behind-the-teeth braces as well as Invisalign.>

Metal or Ceramic Braces

Traditional metal braces use brackets, springs, wires, and elastics to gently move your teeth into the correct positions. Modern braces are a proven and effective treatment. For most patients, treatment lasts an average of two years.

Invisalign Clear Aligners

Invisalign aligners are an alternative to braces that may work for some patients. The aligners are virtually invisible while you wear them, and they can be removed to brush your teeth or when you are eating. Invisalign treatment takes approximately two years for most patients.

Do you feel anxious when you go to the dentist?

We have many patients who experience dental anxiety. To help them stay calm, we provide a relaxed and comfortable office environment. We also offer sedation options to provide the level of assistance they need to manage their anxiety during their appointment.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is good for patients with higher levels of anxiety or for longer procedures. We prescribe an anti-anxiety medication in a pill form that you take one hour prior to your appointment in our office. The medication will relax you during your treatment - some patients even fall asleep! We can safely combine oral sedation and nitrous oxide (laughing gas) if a higher level of sedation is needed. During the procedure, your vitals (Heart Rate and Blood Pressure) will be closely monitored. It is important that you don't eat or drink anything for at least 3 hours prior. After the procedure, you will need to go home with an escort as you will still be impaired. Please review the attached instructions you need to follow before and after your procedure.

IV Sedation (General Anesthesia)

IV sedation or "Sleep Dentistry" is for patients who have severe anxiety, or for patients who prefer to be completely sedated during their treatment. IV sedation is administered by a certified dentist who will administer the sedation and monitor your progress during your treatment. Patients sleep comfortably while their treatment is completed. After a short recovery period, you will be escorted home to rest for the remainder of the day.

Please note that for oral and IV sedation you will be legally impaired and unable to drive. You will need to arrange transportation home for our office and have someone to be with you for 24 hours after your appointment.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is a popular sedative gas that has been safely used in dentistry for decades. A small mask is placed on the nose and you breathe the gas during the entire procedure. It creates a euphoric sensation that calms and relaxes you and allows you to complete your treatment much more easily. It works best for patients who have mild to moderate anxiety. It is not intended to put you to sleep. A benefit of laughing gas is that it wears off within minutes of completing your treatment. You will be able to return to your daily activities and an escort is not required. It is important that you don't eat or drink liquids to 3 hours prior to your treatment.

We provide emergency dental appointments for urgent care. If you need care right away, call our office, or if it’s after hours, call our dentist on call.

If you’re a patient from another dental office and they’re unable to see you right away, we can examine and treat your emergency and provide your regular dentist with a summary report.

During an emergency appointment, we’ll review your dental and medical history and assess your emergency for treatment. After that, we’ll discuss your treatment options.

In dental emergencies where an infection is present, we’ll prescribe antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication to treat the infection before treating you. Once the infection has subsided we’ll proceed with treatment.

Common dental emergencies:

Toothache - If you have a toothache, call us immediately. While you are waiting for your appointment, place ice on your cheek near the sore area. You can also use pain medication such as ibuprofen for relief from pain.

Facial swelling - Call our office right away if you notice facial swelling. The swelling can worsen and become a serious medical emergency. Facial swelling often requires immediate treatment and can require antibiotics if an infection is present.

Broken or cracked teeth - Rinse your mouth gently and recover any pieces of the tooth that you can. Place a piece of clean gauze over the area to help stop bleeding. A cold compress near the area can help with pain and swelling.

Knocked-out tooth - Call us right away if you lose a tooth. We can often save and replace a tooth if you come for treatment within a couple of hours after the injury. You can keep the tooth safe by rinsing it and placing it back in your mouth or in a glass of water.

Dislodged crown - Call our office right away. If you are able to place the crown back on your tooth, you may be able to hold it in place with temporary dental cement from your local pharmacy. A small piece of chewing gum will also work. If you can’t place the crown, put it in a clean plastic bag and bring it with you to your appointment.

Loose or lost filling - If a filling has come out, rinse the area thoroughly and place a small piece of sugar-free gum in the hole. Pain medication such as ibuprofen can help with any pain or discomfort you may feel.

Dr. Mirzai grew up in London, Ontario and attended Western University for her undergraduate degree in Medical Sciences with a Major in Physiology. During this time, she went on a service trip to Costa Rica and Nicaragua where she provided dental care to citizens of all ages via mobile clinics that served the most remote areas. It was on this trip that she fell in love with dentistry and with travelling. Since then Dr. Mirzai has taken every opportunity to travel, and has currently visited 14 countries and 3 world wonders.

Dr. Mirzai attended Schulich School of Dentistry at Western University and received her Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree with Distinction. She also received the Schulich Dentistry Award in Professionalism and Ethics, which recognizes a student who has demonstrated high levels of professionalism on the clinic floor with patients, staff, faculty, and other students.

In her spare time, Dr. Mirzai enjoys spending time with family, reading, playing piano and traveling. Her positive attitude, dedication and integrity make her a great asset to the team at Aria Dental Centre.

Dr. Mostafa grew up in London. He holds a degree in Biochemistry from the University of Western Ontario, and a Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the University of Detroit Mercy (2000). He has spent his entire 20-year career serving the London community and has owned and operated Aria Dental Centre for 16 years.

Dr. Mostafa credits his growth and success to our founder, Dr. Rick Merritt, who was his mentor, teacher, and friend. He’s deeply grateful for the years Dr. Merritt took him under his wing. Dr. Merritt passed away in 2016, and Dr. Mostafa strives to honour his legacy by extending the gift of mentorship and service to others.

While he is experienced in all aspects of dentistry, Dr. Mostafa has a focused interest in implant and reconstructive dentistry. A strong believer in education, he has travelled the world to seek out advanced training and courses to further his skills and training.

Dr. Mostafa is a member of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario, the Ontario Dental Association, and the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. He’s fluent in English, French, and Arabic.

Outside the office, he volunteers and serves on the boards of numerous charitable and political organizations, including the Nazem Kadri Foundation, Kings University College, and others. He and his wife, Rania, have three children and he’s a busy hockey and basketball dad.

We try our very best to keep and fix every tooth we can, but sometimes a tooth is severely broken down or has lost too much bone support and must be removed. At Aria Dental Centre, we perform hundreds of extractions each year. A referral to a specialist or hospital is rarely needed.

We perform simple extractions of individual teeth, removal of wisdom teeth and even removal of all teeth at once in preparation for a denture. Wisdom Teeth

Did you know that people have three sets of molars? Wisdom teeth are a large set of molars that are the last adult teeth to grow in. Unfortunately, there’s not always enough room for the wisdom teeth to grow. When that happens, we need to extract the wisdom teeth so they don’t cause damage to your other teeth.

Sports Guards

All it takes is a flying puck or hockey stick to cause serious injury to your mouth. Sports guards absorb the impact and keep your teeth from being broken or knocked out. Our guards are designed not to slip while you play, and they won’t interfere with your ability to talk to your teammates.

Fillings

Fillings are used to repair cavities caused by tooth decay. We use tooth-coloured and amalgam fillings to restore your teeth and protect them from further decay.

Crowns

Dental crowns restore a tooth that has been compromised. The crown fits over the entire tooth, restoring its appearance and function, and preventing it from being damaged further. Crowns are designed to match your other teeth in shape and colour.

Bridges

Bridges are used to replace a tooth that has been lost. The bridge attaches to your natural teeth and consists of one or more artificial teeth called pontics. Once in place, the bridge is virtually unnoticeable.

CEREC (E4D by Planmeca)

Our in-office CEREC system lets us provide you with dental crowns, bridges, and veneers in a single appointment. CEREC is a computer-assisted system that scans your mouth to take a digital impression, assists us in designing the restoration, and manufactures the restoration in a special machine. Crowns and restorations produced by CEREC are shaded to match your teeth and can be placed as soon as they’re ready.

Preventative dentistry appointments are a vital part of your dental health care and you should have your teeth cleaned at least once a year to remove plaque and tartar buildup.

Oral Hygiene

Regular cleaning by a trained hygienist is necessary to remove plaque and tartar buildup from your teeth, especially above the gumline. Your hygienist will use special tools to clean and polish your teeth. We may recommend fluoride treatment to protect your teeth from decay.

Dental Exam

Dental examinations are important because they help us monitor your dental health and identify problems early, which makes a successful treatment more likely. During your exam, your dentist will check for decay or injury and screen you for oral cancer. We may also take X-rays to aid in diagnosis and to keep a record of your dental health.
